Visitors to Macau in the first quarter of 2024 saw total spending excluding gaming expenses rise 35.9% year-on-year to just under 20.35 billion people ($2.53 billion). The figure followed a recent visitor spending survey by the city's statistics office released on Monday, up 20.2% from the first quarter of 2019, the year before COVID-19.

During the period, visitors' per capita spending fell 24.3% year-over-year to MOP2,293.

Macau had about 8.88 million visitors in the three months to March 31, up 79.4% year-on-year, official data showed.

Night visitors to Macau totaled about four times more than day-trippers during the first quarter, the Macau Statistics Office said on Monday. Night-time visitors to Macau spent a total of 16.43 billion MOPs during the reporting period, up 33.1% from a year earlier, data showed.

Total spending by visitors on the day rose 48.5% year-on-year to 3.92 billion, the bureau said

Shopping was the single largest category of non-gaming spending by Macau visitors from January to March, accounting for 48.0% of total spending. Accommodation and food and beverage spending accounted for 23.3% and 20.9% of total spending in the quarter, respectively, completing the top three categories.
