Sales of official lottery products in mainland China reached 106.37 billion yuan (about $15.83 billion) in the January-March period of 2019, up 2.1% from a year earlier, data released by China's finance ministry showed on Tuesday.

Welfare lottery sales totaled 49.06 billion yuan in the first quarter of this year, down 6.1% from a year earlier. Sports lottery sales were slightly below 57.26 billion yuan, up 10.3% from a year earlier.

In the three months to March 31, 14 of mainland China's 31 provinces and cities saw an increase in lottery sales, official data showed.

Guangdong, a mainland Chinese province just off Macau, continues to lead the major mainland lottery market. Lottery sales in the province fell 4.3% year-on-year to nearly 9.77 billion yuan in the first quarter of 2019.

For the month of March, lottery sales fell 13.0% year-on-year to 34.95 billion yuan. Last month, welfare lottery sales reached about 16.55 billion yuan, down 16.4% year-on-year. This month, sports lottery sales fell 9.7% to 18.45 billion yuan.
